Canoe capsizes in Chalco Hills Recreation Area; one person missing

OMAHA, Neb. —

Omaha-area first responders were called to a report of a water rescue on Thursday.

The incident happened around 8:20 p.m. at Wehrspann Lake at Chalco Hills Recreation Area.

Gretna Assistant Fire Chief Dan Whitted said a canoe tipped over, and one person was able to get out of the lake.

He said there is possibly one person in the water still. The person who was in the water and was able to get out did not see the other person get out of the water.

Whitted said crews have boats in the water with sonar and more boats on their way to assist in the search.
