One person dead, five others injured after Mall of Louisiana shooting

Police are investigating after one person died and five others were injured in a shooting at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge.Police say they believe the shooting, which happened inside the mall, was a targeted incident between two groups of people who were arguing near the food court before shooting at each other. Baton Rouge Police Department initially said 10 people were injured and were transported to a local hospital. Sister station WDSU reports that police have since confirmed that there were six victims, one of whom has died.Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill said some innocent bystanders were struck by gunfire.Five people are in custody at this time, WDSU reports. It’s unclear how many people were involved and/or fired a gun.Baton Rouge Police Chief TJ Morse told reporters that investigators believe there is currently no threat to the public.The identities of the victims and suspects/people of interest have not been released by police. According to a Facebook post by Lafayette Parish Mayor-President Monique Blanco Boulet, three of the victims are seniors at Ascension Episcopal School in Lafayette.“We are heartbroken by the senseless violence that happened today at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge,” she said, adding that she was asking her community to “join us in holding all of these families close in prayer.”Rachel Delcambre, a spokesperson for the school, said in an email that the school would not be giving additional information at this time “out of deep respect for the families and the sensitivity of this situation.”Video below: ‘Keep our city in prayer’: Moment of silence held during session for shooting at Mall of LouisianaLouisiana Gov. We continue to assist with their investigation however we can.This has been a frightening day for our shopping center community, and our thoughts are with all of those who were impacted by this senseless act of violence.Mall of Louisiana is currently closed. We will share updates on reopening and operations as more information becomes available.”The police chief asked anyone with videos or information about the incident to provide it to investigators.This is a developing story.
