Paw’ll aboard the Pup Bus: Retired couple takes dogs on adventures all summer long

The dog days of summer are great for riding around in your car, windows down, head out, tail wagging, tongue lolling in the breeze.

Well, maybe that’s just for the dogs.

Brenda and Kim Schrader know how important that experience is for dogs, so they decided to open a business called K9 Outdoor Adventure to provide that service.

Every morning this summer, the Schraders have driven their Pup Bus around Fargo and West Fargo, North Dakota, picking up their pup patrons and taking them to the dog park.

“Believe it or not, I drove a semi for 30 years,” Kim Schrader told WDAY-TV. “The dog bus is way more fun.”

The Schraders started their business in memory of their own two dogs, River and Abner.

“We were thinking of getting another dog,” Kim Schrader said, “and then we sat down and we thought, ‘Well, let’s do something for all dogs.’ So then we put the bus together.”

Every morning, the Schraders drive to their clients’ homes, and the dogs run onto the bus. After greeting their canine companions, each dog is then secured in its seat, where it’s free to lounge on the bench or ride with its head out the window.

“You know, their first day they get a little bit shy,” Brenda Schrader said.

Kim used to work on the road, and Brenda used to run a cleaning service.

“You have jobs that you go to for all kinds of reasons,” Brenda said. “And this one, we just do it cause we love it. That’s it.”

The Schraders said the dogs feel like family, and they treat them like they were their own.

“We love all dogs,” Kim said, with Brenda adding, “They’re sweethearts. We don’t think they have a bad bone in their body.”

They have over 50 dogs that they pick up and drop off throughout the week, and their pictures line the inside of the bus.

“Dogs are one of the only things on this earth that give you unconditional love,” Kim said.

The Schraders based their business on offering “carefully planned adventures that allow your dog to explore nature, socialize, and stay active under professional supervision,” according to their website.

“We love it. It’s our retirement gig; we really love it,” Kim said. “I wish I would’ve did this 20 years ago.”
