Pottawattamie County Fair celebrates 130 years of tradition and community

POTTAWATTAMIE COUNTY, Iowa —

The Pottawattamie County Fair is marking a major milestone this year, celebrating its 130th anniversary while welcoming families from across southwest Iowa.

Fair organizers say this year’s event featured several new attractions, including mutton bustin’, figure-eight races and a hot air balloon, alongside longtime traditions such as livestock shows and agricultural exhibits.

Despite high temperatures during the fair, board members said the community continued to show strong support. Additional cooling stations and shaded areas were added around the fairgrounds to help visitors beat the heat.

“The fair is a special place with 130-year history,” said fair board member Dan Hansen. “The cohesiveness of our communities to rally around each other and celebrate that connectedness is what brings us closer together.”

The fair concludes with its annual premium livestock auction, where local businesses purchase animals and support 4-H and FFA exhibitors. Organizers say the auction helps young participants continue their agricultural projects while highlighting the fair’s longstanding commitment to youth and community.
