FDA recalls prescription blood thinner nationwide

If you take an anticoagulant – a class of medications popularly known as “blood thinners” – you may want to check your medicine cabinet.
The Food and Drug Administration has released a report warning that some dabigatran capsules have been recalled nationwide.

Dabigatran, commonly known by the brand name Pradaxa, is commonly used to reduce the risk of stroke and blood clots, particularly in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation, according to the Mayo Clinic. The recall is limited to certain lots of dabigatran etexilate capsules manufactured by Alkem Laboratories Ltd. and distributed by Major Pharmaceuticals. The affected lots reportedly failed impurity and degradation tests; as the FDA hasn’t yet assigned a risk level to this recall, it’s unclear how likely the affected medication is to cause adverse health effects.

The recall includes 75-milligram and 150-milligram dabigatran etexilate capsules. The affected medication was distributed in blister packs, which were packaged in cartons. Check your medication against the information listed below.
