Primary Tuesday: These are the races with potential national consequences

WASHINGTON —

Voters in six states — Alabama, Connecticut, Minnesota, South Carolina, Vermont, and Wisconsin — are heading to the polls for primary elections Tuesday. A number of key races in several states feature moderate and progressive Democrats facing off to become their party’s nominee in November’s midterm general election.

Minnesota

In Minnesota, Democrats are working to retain a Senate seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Tina Smith. Rep. Angie Craig, D-Minnesota, is running as a moderate, while Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan is campaigning as a progressive.

Also in Minnesota, Gov. Tim Walz is not seeking a third term or any other role in public office. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minnesota, is running to replace him, which could leave her Senate seat open next year.

Wisconsin

In Wisconsin, Democratic Gov. Tony Evers has chosen not to seek a third term.

State Rep. Francesca Hong, a Democratic Socialist, is leading in recent polling, despite Evers endorsing moderate Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley.

Also in Wisconsin, Michael Alfonso, the son-in-law of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, is running to take over Republican Rep. Tom Tiffany’s House seat. Tiffany is running for governor.

Alabama

In Alabama, many voters are casting ballots in newly redrawn districts, following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision last term that weakened the Voting Rights Act‘s protections for Black-majority House districts.

Republicans are attempting to flip the seat held by Democrat Shomari Figures, who represents one of two formerly Black-majority districts.

South Carolina

A special Republican primary is also taking place in South Carolina to select a replacement for the late Sen. Lindsey Graham. His sister, Darline Graham, is currently serving the remainder of his term and is running for a full six-year term alongside nine other Republican candidates.
