Why Husker analyst Damon Benning thinks this is hybrid tight end Carter Nelson’s breakout season
OMAHA, Neb. —
Fall camp is just around the corner for Nebraska football, and one player to watch is Ainsworth native Carter Nelson.
After an impressive offseason, the hybrid tight end has positioned himself for a big year. Huskers Radio Network analyst Damon Benning said he believes this could be Nelson’s breakout season, ranking him among Nebraska’s top wide receivers.

“Carter Nelson is an extremely tough cover. He’s healthy, he’s big. I think he’s comfortable,” Benning said. “He knows how to go to work. I’m not sure how they’ll exactly utilize him, but I definitely would put Carter in those top 6 or 7 wide receivers. And you pit him with Bonner and kind of that versatility and that hybrid displaced tight end wide receiver move guy. I think they’ve got something in Carter.”
In addition to Nelson and Janiran Bonner in a hybrid position, Nebraska’s presumed starters are juniors Nyziah Hunter, Jacory Barney and Kwazi Gilmer, a UCLA transfer.
The Huskers also have a handful of players on the rise, including Quinn Clark.
