The sudden death of South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham has initiated a process to appoint a temporary replacement and select a new Republican nominee for the upcoming election.
South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster is expected to appoint a temporary replacement on Monday afternoon to fill Graham’s seat in Congress until Jan. 3. This process is standard for any unexpected congressional vacancy.

At the same time, a new Republican nominee for U.S. senator must be chosen. Before his death, Graham had secured the Republican nomination for what would have been his fifth term in the U.S. Senate.
According to South Carolina state election laws, a special primary will be held on Aug. 11 to determine the new Republican nominee. The winner of that primary will face the current Democratic nominee, Dr. Annie Andrews, in the November election to begin a full term in January.
One possibility is that the person appointed by the governor could also run in the special primary.
