Residents of Auburn spent Tuesday clearing debris and assessing damage after a powerful storm swept through southeastern Nebraska late Monday afternoon.It tore limbs from thousands of trees, damaged homes, and knocked out power across much of the community. Block after block of the city was littered with fallen branches and uprooted trees.“It was devastating seeing all,” said Auburn resident Britneigh Williams, whose home was damaged in the storm. “We couldn’t get anywhere. Amanda Horn said her property suffered significant damage.“The hood of my car, the windshield, there’s some side panel stuff,” Horn said. “It did the roof on this side in the carport.”Business owner Nick Bantz said the storm intensified quickly as winds hurled tree limbs through the area.“We had trees across the street breaking off, flying toward the windows,” Bantz said. “We got away from the window, and it sounded like a locomotive.”The severe weather caused widespread power outages across Auburn into the night.“It really is kind of unsettling,” Auburn City Administrator Crystal Dunekacke said. “You’re waiting for the dawn; you’re waiting for lights to come back on so you can see the extent of the damage — just to have such widespread destruction and debris.”By Tuesday, most power had been restored, according to city officials. The school district canceled school on the second-to-last day of the year.Residents said they were thankful the storm did not result in serious injuries despite the widespread damage.“We’re lucky.
