U.S. Supreme Court to hear Nebraska’s Perkins County Canal fight with Colorado
LINCOLN, Neb. —
The U.S. Supreme Court will hear Nebraska’s claims against Colorado regarding the Perkins County Canal.
Nebraska alleges Colorado violated the South Platte River Compact by letting “junior water users” use water that belongs to Nebraska during the irrigation season.

The state is also looking for resolutions regarding Colorado’s so-called interference with Nebraska’s right to build and run the Perkins County Canal.
Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers said resolving these issues will provide “important legal certainty.”
Previously, Hilgers called the dispute “one of the most important water-related issues of my lifetime.”
