A section of Western Avenue in Omaha has been renamed Tessie O. Edwards Avenue to honor a reverend and former teacher at Creighton Prep. City officials and school staff celebrated Edwards’ contributions to the school and its students during the renaming ceremony. The newly named portion of Western Avenue runs between 72nd and 74th streets. Her family unveiled the street sign at the event. “Let’s do it mom. Let’s unveil. Tessie O. take a look at that, oh my goodness, Tessie O. Edwards Avenue,” said Edwards’ grandniece, Shawn Yancy.Organizers of the event said hundreds of youth across Omaha have benefited from Edwards’ work for the Black Student Catholic Scholarship Fund of Omaha, which is now known as the Ms. Tessie O.
