‘Texas rivalry runs pretty deep’: Husker volleyball welcomes challenging match early on in the season

LINCOLN, Neb. —

Nebraska volleyball, the No. 1 preseason-ranked team in the country, has quite the challenge in the Huskers’ second match of the regular season.

They play No. 2-ranked Texas on Aug. 30.

For Nebraska, a team with national championship aspirations, they are welcoming the opportunity to be tested right off the bat.

“At the end of the day we have to go in and we have to play our best volleyball for two to three hours, so. I think we’re really excited to really be pushed, and we’re going to learn a lot about ourselves, whether we win or lose. So I’m excited for that,” said Bergen Reilly.

“We’re renewing the rivalry with Texas. It’s really exciting for me. I grew up in the Big 12, and played here in the Big 12. So that Texas rivalry runs pretty deep, and they have everybody returning. We have most everybody returning, so it should be a really fun match,” said Coach Dani Busboom Kelly.

It’s a rematch of the 2023 national championship when the Longhorns swept the Huskers.

“Obviously, the last time we played them. It didn’t go our way, and that’s okay. That’s sports, but I think just opening the season with such a strong team in a game against such a strong team is going to be super exciting — not only for us but for the fans as well,” said Andi Jackson.

Nebraska kicks off its season on Aug. 16 with the Red-White Scrimmage, and then they head to Dallas for an exhibition at AT&T Stadium before making their way to Las Vegas and rounding out that road trip with a trip to Wrigley Field in Chicago to face Missouri.
