A Douglas County Sheriff’s deputy injured in a shooting in Northwest Omaha around noon Sunday, Sheriff Aaron Hanson told the media in a news conference.Hanson said the male deputy was shot and is in stable condition after being taken to the hospital in a cruiser.Two deputies were responding to a domestic dispute where a boyfriend was accused of breaking into an apartment near Blair High Road and Potter Street, Hanson said. KETV NewsWatch 7’s Beth Carlson spoke with one witness at the scene.”I was leaving today to go get Runza for me and my girlfriend, and as I’m pulling out, I look over and see someone actively trying to break into the sliding glass door,” said Riley Packett. “At first he started kicking the door and then it turned into him slamming his hands on the door, like doing his best to break in.”Packett said he then called the police.When deputies arrived, Hanson said the suspect, 39-year-old Brian Huggins, immediately opened fire on them.The deputy was able to call for help, according to a news release. Multiple deputies and Omaha Police Department officers responded to the scene.The suspect was found in the hallway of an apartment building with a gunshot wound and was also transported to the hospital, Hanson said. In a news release, investigators said Huggins died at the hospital. Investigators have not yet said whether the suspect was shot by law enforcement.KETV is waiting to learn the names of the injured deputy and the suspect.Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer and Omaha Mayor John Ewing Jr. posted a statement on social media saying: “Today’s incident underscores the dangerous reality that all law enforcement professionals face in the line of duty. We are keeping the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office deputy in our thoughts and wishing him a speedy recovery.We also want to recognize the quick response by Omaha Police officers, whose immediate actions and rapid transport to the hospital made a critical difference.
