These 83 members of Congress are leaving their seats after 2026

As most states wrap up their primaries, 70 House representatives and 13 U.S. senators are set to leave their seats after 2026, according to an analysis from the Get the Facts Data Team.

Some members of Congress, like California representative and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, decided to retire at the end of their term and pass the baton to the next generation.

Other members decided to leave their seats to run for other offices, like Michigan Rep. Haley Stevens. Some, like Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy, lost their primaries.

The Get the Facts Data Team tracked the status of all members of Congress who were in office in mid-August. Those who resigned before then, like Marjorie Taylor Greene, and were later replaced through a special election were not included in the data. Members who died and had their seats filled by another lawmaker were also not included.

Here’s who’s leaving their seats and why.

Who’s leaving the House of Representatives?

Every house seat is up for reelection every two years. For this election cycle, 16% of incumbents will leave their seats, with 30 congressional members retiring, 28 leaving their seats to seek other offices, 11 losing their primaries and one withdrawing.

Texas has the most House representatives leaving their seats, with 12. Half of those members are retiring after this election cycle. Some representatives, like Democratic Rep. Lloyd Doggett, decided to retire rather than compete under Texas’s newly drawn congressional map, which favors Republicans.

Other representatives like Rep. Al Green, decided to run in a new district but lost their primaries. Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett took a chance on running for a Senate seat, but lost her bid for the Democratic nomination.

Florida has six congressional members leaving their House seats, four of whom are retiring. Rep. Cory Mills was the only House representative in the state to lose his primary.

Who’s leaving the Senate?

Unlike the House, about a third of Senate seats are up for election every two years, with senators serving six-year terms.

Of the 13 senators leaving the chamber, two lost their primaries after President Donald Trump declined to endorse their campaigns.

Other prominent senators, like Mitch McConnell, are among the 10 retiring. Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville dropped his reelection bid to run for the state’s governor seat.

The November General Election will have several competitive seats as both Democrats and Republicans try to gain control of the chambers.
