The U.S. national debt has hit more than $40 trillion, according to new numbers from the Treasury Department on Wednesday.
That divvies out to about $116,800 in debt per American, based on current population numbers from the Census Bureau.

To see how the total public debt outstanding has grown over time, the Get the Facts Data Team analyzed data from the Treasury Department.
In the past decade, the total national debt has grown about 112%. Since 2000, it’s grown nearly 600%.
