WASHINGTON —

As the 60-day deadline to reach a permanent end to the war in Iran expired Monday, President Donald Trump said the deadline was irrelevant and there is no timetable to stop the conflict. There’s also no sign the agreement will be extended.

This comes as negotiations remain stalled and the war nears its sixth month.

Hearst Television Washington Correspondent Jackie DeFusco asked President Trump in the Oval Office on Monday if he is any closer to reaching a final deal to end Iran’s nuclear program than he was 60 days ago.

The president responded, “Well, they want to make a deal, but they’re not gonna make the kind of deal I feel is necessary. Look, we’re in there for one reason, Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon.”

The president has also threatened longtime U.S. ally Oman after Iran announced it had reached an agreement with Oman over a plan for ships to travel through the Strait of Hormuz. Trump told Fox News the U.S. would bomb Oman if it interferes.

The memorandum of understanding signed between the U.S. and Iran that set a 60-day goal to reach a permanent plan to end the war expired Monday, with no word on extending the agreement.

House Speaker Mike Johnson recently said that once the war is over, gas and grocery prices will start coming down, a point likely to be emphasized as the midterm elections approach.

Today, AAA is reporting the average price for a gallon of gas is about $4.07. That’s about a 37% increase compared to when the war started on Feb. 28.
