President Donald Trump has extended the ceasefire with Iran indefinitely, citing fractured leadership in the country and the need for a safe and comprehensive deal. The president declined to set a firmer timeline for the ceasefire extension, stating he does not want to rush into an agreement. He said Iran needs more time to address its internal turmoil, claiming they do not know who is leading the country. “I want to take my time. We have plenty of time, and I want to get a great deal. I want to get a deal where our nation and the world are safe from lunatics with nuclear weapons,” Trump said to reporters in the Oval Office. Initially, Trump predicted the war would last four to six weeks. The president also addressed concerns Thursday about higher gas prices, saying they are worth the cost to ensure Iran does not develop nuclear weapons. When a reporter asked Trump if he would be OK with oil prices doubling to $200 a barrel, Trump responded, “I think that there’s nothing worse than a nuclear weapon that takes out one of your cities or two of your cities or three.” When the war started at the end of February, the average price for a gallon of regular gas nationwide, according to AAA, was $2.98. Today, AAA reports the average is $4.06 a gallon. As the war enters its ninth week, Trump reiterated his belief that Iran’s leadership is fractured. However, a spokesperson for Iran’s foreign ministry dismissed his comments as “a form of deflection.” Iran’s parliament speaker also said Thursday on social media, “We are all ‘Iranian’ and ‘revolutionary,’ and with the iron unity of the nation and government, with complete obedience to the Supreme Leader of the Revolution, we will make the aggressor criminal regret his actions.”Hours before the president’s remarks in the Oval Office on Thursday, Trump ordered the U.S. military to “shoot and kill” Iranian small boats deploying mines in the Strait of Hormuz. According to U.S. Central Command, since the start of the blockade, U.S. forces have redirected at least 33 vessels to turn around or return to port.Experts argue that Iran’s leverage over the Strait of Hormuz gives the country power during the ceasefire, as higher gas and oil prices continue to impact global markets, especially during an election year.Keep watching for the latest from the Washington News Bureau:
