Trump says negotiations with Iran will resume today after canceling plans for large-scale military attack
President Donald Trump said Sunday that negotiations with Iran will resume today, following his decision to cancel plans for a large-scale military strike.

President Donald Trump said Sunday that negotiations with Iran will resume today after he decided to cancel plans for what he described as “the biggest attack since World War II.”
Trump said he abandoned the strike after Gulf leaders urged him to hold off on new attacks.

In a social media post on Saturday night, Trump said Iran and other Middle Eastern countries asked him to hold off on further strikes because “the perimeters of a deal” have been agreed to.
“This would include the Immediate, Complete, and Total OPENING OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT, and an end to Iran’s nuclear threat,” Trump added. “Based on this request, I have agreed, for the future benefit of the WORLD and, likewise, the survival of a successful and prosperous Iran, to cancel the attack, subject to being able to rapidly make a DEAL.”
In the meantime, Trump continues to insist Iran wants to make a deal.
“They said we’d like to make a deal. Now, you know, I don’t know what they say because a lot of times they’ll say that to me and then they’ll go out and say, we don’t know what he’s talking about. Obviously they don’t want to be attacked, and they knew the extent of the attack because they saw it forming,” Trump said.
The president did not elaborate on who will be involved in the talks. However, he reiterated that the potential deal would include reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway that handles about one-fifth of the world’s oil traffic, and addressing U.S. concerns about Iran’s nuclear program.
Iran has repeatedly attacked ships traveling through the strait without its authorization. On Sunday, a spokesperson for Iran’s foreign ministry said the strait “will in no way return to the status it was before February 28th,” which is when the war began.
A regional official told the Associated Press that the proposal announced by Trump on Sunday halts attacks in the region, including those by Iranian-backed militias in Iraq, and ends the U.S. naval blockade on Iran.
