Trump says ‘we’ll know in 48 hours’ regarding possible Iran War announcement

WASHINGTON —

President Donald Trump said a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz could be finalized within the next two days, offering a potential step toward easing regional tensions.

“A lot of progress has been made. They called me and they said please, let’s talk. They want to talk,” Trump told reporters. “They want to make a deal. They do not want to be hit.”

Trump was asked by a reporter Tuesday night, “where are we with Iran?”

Trump answered, “We’re moving along very nicely,” adding, “we’ll know in 48 hours.”

Regional officials told the Associated Press that the possible agreement involves Iran and Oman. The proposal would allow ships to enter the Persian Gulf through an Iranian-controlled route and exit through a route controlled by Oman, with service fees charged for providing security.

The Trump administration has previously ruled out any deal that gives Iran control over the strait. On Monday, Trump reiterated his position, saying he would not allow Iran to charge tolls.

Meanwhile, ships traveling through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway that handles about one-fifth of the world’s oil traffic, continue to face attacks.

Adding to the uncertainty are Iran-backed Houthi rebels, who have claimed responsibility for attacks on ships crossing the Red Sea, another critical Middle Eastern waterway.

This heightened security risk in the region could have major implications for the global economy.

Experts are warning that a major re-escalation of the conflict could have significant impacts on the global economy and cause gas prices to soar if the fighting does not subside.

According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of regular gas is $4.08, about 37% higher than when the war began five months ago.
