WASHINGTON —
The United States Mint will start producing a new $1 coin bearing President Donald Trump’s face, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Wednesday.
Bessent posted new renderings of the coin to his social media accounts, saying the coin will be minted to honor “the enduring legacy of liberty and a lasting symbol to patriotism.”

One side of the coin features Trump’s face with the word “Liberty” engraved at the top. Beneath Trump’s face are the years 1776-2026, representing the nation’s 250th birthday.
The reverse side depicts the presidential seal with “250” inscribed at the center.
The coin is currently in production and will be available beginning in the fall, according to multiple media outlets. It will be made with non-precious metals, but have a gold-like finish, according to reports.

Bessent also said in May that his department has prepared a design for a $250 bill featuring Trump.

Some are criticizing new $1 coins, pointing to laws —particularly 31 U.S. Code 5112 — that no coins should be made that “bear the image of a living former or current President” or any dead president within two years of death.
But Treasury officials call the coins “collectibles,” designed to commemorate America’s 250th birthday. They pointed to a precedent, saying that then-President Calvin Coolidge appeared alongside George Washington on the half-dollar for the nation’s 150th anniversary.
The federal Commission of Fine Arts initially approved a commemorative coin featuring Trump in March. But the design unveiled Wednesday is drastically different.
The coins would be the latest example of Trump expanding his personal brand in his official capacity since returning to the White House in 2025.
