US Coast Guard rescues 67-year-old boater stranded on Santa Rosa Island, where a wildfire is burning
The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a 67-year-old man over the weekend from Santa Rosa Island off California’s coast after he became shipwrecked on the island, where a wildfire is currently burning.According to the Coast Guard Air Station Ventura, the man crashed his boat onto the island’s rocks on Friday and used emergency flares and spelled out an S.O.S signal to call for help.The Coast Guard said that they had located and rescued the man on Saturday, and said he did not suffer injuries.The island remains largely undeveloped and is only accessible by boat.Firefighters have been battling a blaze on Santa Rosa Island that kicked off on Friday, and as of Tuesday evening, had burned nearly 17,000 acres.The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection says the fire, as of Tuesday, was 26% contained, CNN reportsThe fire has destroyed two historic structures on the island. On Sunday, the fire also forced the evacuation of 11 National Park employees, according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department. Santa Rosa Island is also closed to visitors.
