‘Closest call I’ve ever seen’: Person leaps at last second to avoid being hit along Ohio interstate

Video from an Ohio Department of Transportation traffic camera shows a person jumping at the right time to avoid being struck on the shoulder of a busy interstate.
The footage shows what happened leading up to the near-miss around 6 a.m. on Monday along Ohio’s I-670 in Columbus.

A broken-down SUV can be seen in the interstate’s SmartLane, which was closed at the time of the crash. A passenger is shown walking around the disabled vehicle and standing right by the center median when a car using the closed lane approaches and crashes.
The passenger was able to leap at the last second to avoid being hit. Several media outlets in the area reported that one person was taken to the hospital after the crash.
Matt Bruning, press secretary for the Ohio Department of Transportation, posted the footage on social media with a warning to other drivers.
“When the SmartLane on I-670 is closed, there’s a reason,” he wrote. “It is first and foremost an emergency breakdown shoulder and only opened when traffic conditions warrant it and only after it has been swept and cleared of any vehicles or debris. There are MULTIPLE signs alerting drivers when it is open and when it is closed. This is about the closest call (for the person who had to jump onto the median wall) I’ve ever seen. Pay attention!”
