Officials announced that there were two confirmed shark sightings in the waters off Pine Point Beach in Maine on Tuesday.

Scarborough Marine Resource Officer Daryen Granata was informed that two sharks, each estimated to be about 6 to 8 feet in length, were spotted in the area of the ocean off the southern tip of Prouts Neck and near the mouth of the Scarborough River.

Scarborough is around 7 miles south of Portland, Maine. The sightings were relayed to Granata by a shark expert with the New England Aquarium, who had reviewed footage that was submitted by a local recreational fisherman.

Two videos of the shark sightings have been shared by Scarborough officials. One video shows a shark swim right by a man who appeared to be fishing from a paddleboard. Officials said the second video shows a different shark that also swam close to the fisherman.

The shark expert told Granata that based on the available video, the sharks appeared to be consistent with juvenile great white sharks.

“The Scarborough Public Safety Team is sharing this information to promote public awareness and encourage beachgoers, swimmers, surfers, paddlers, and boaters to remain vigilant while enjoying local waters,” town officials said in a news release. “While shark encounters remain rare in Maine, the public is encouraged to use caution, avoid swimming near schools of bait fish or seals, and report any additional sightings to local authorities.”

Scarborough officials said they are coordinating with their regional partners and marine experts, and that they will provide updates as additional information becomes available.
