Watch: Nebraska’s assistant coaches give updates on secondary, defensive edges, linebackers

LINCOLN, Neb. —

Nebraska secondary coach Addison Williams said that his unit is making progress, but he added that it’s hard to know which players are leaders.

“I want a guy to emerge, take it by the horns, and run with it at the end of the day. But at the same time, all of those guys are competing, which makes the competition really good in that room,” Williams said.

Defensive edges coach Roy Manning is also still evaluating his room, but he likes where the Huskers stand ahead of their first game.

“I think the beautiful thing about how Coach (Matt) Rhule has structured our practices is that there is no one standing around and no one is getting a shortage of reps. All of our groups are getting a massive amount of repetition, which makes our team better,” Manning said.

Rob Dvoracek said one of the early standouts in the linebacker room has been former San Diego State linebacker Owen Chambliss, while other players are also coming along.

“There’s a bunch of guys that have done a really nice job. Derek Wacker has done a really nice job, Christian Jones, Pierce Mooberry, Dawson Merritt. I’m going to leave somebody out, but they’ve done a really nice job of adapting to the system,” Dvoracek said.
