WATCH: Plane made emergency landing on California beach after mechanical issue

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. —

A small plane made an emergency landing on a beach in Southern California on Monday after experiencing a mechanical issue moments after takeoff, according to police.

Video of the incident shows the plane flying above the coastline of Huntington State Beach before it gets closer to the sand. It then hits the sand, slides and comes to a sudden stop.

“Mayday, mayday, mayday, we’ve lost our engine,” the pilot is heard saying on audio from ATC.com. “We’re just coming up over the shoreline and we’ll be putting it down on the beach just in front of the stack.”

Two people were on board the plane, the pilot and his 16-year-old nephew. Nobody was injured.

The FAA and NTSB are investigating.
