A tiny dog is making big waves on social media this week after first responders pulled out all the stops to save it from California’s San Francisco Bay.

In a social media post, Menlo Park Fire Protection District officials said a 911 caller reported that a dog was swimming all by itself in the vast body of water after it “ran out into the water and just kept swimming.”

The 911 call prompted an air-and-sea response from first responders from Menlo Park Fire Protection District, East Palo Alto Police Department and others, who all worked together to bring the pup back to dry land.

Upon arriving at the scene, first responders used binoculars to spot the dog. A drone was then used to get a better look and determine its GPS coordinates so that a rescue boat could navigate to and rescue the furry swimmer.

In its own social media post featuring a video of the rescue efforts, the East Palo Alto Police Department joked that “the cat in the tree had the day off,” and said the rescue effort looked like something out of an action movie. The police department said the dog didn’t have an easy time of it while on the water, saying it survived an “aerial assault by an organized gang of seagulls” before it was rescued.

Once back on dry land, animal control took the dog in until its owners could be found, the police department said.

The local SPCA later reunited the dog with its family, who had been searching for it since the Fourth of July, the fire department said.
