University of Iowa sophomore Ellie Mangold said she was about 100 feet away when the shooting started. “I heard the four gunshots, and I talked to my friend and was like, ‘Was that gunshots?'” Mangold said.

Moments later, panic spread through the crowd.

“We hear people screaming, I look back, everyone starts running,” Mangold said. “So we were just like, ‘We gotta move now. We got to get out of here.'”

She said the violence was not how she expected a Saturday night in Iowa City to end.

Mangold said the shooting was especially shocking because she normally feels secure in the city.

“We were just like walking around, and I had no idea because usually I feel really safe in this town,” she said. “So just seeing that happen was insane to me.”

University of Iowa junior Jade Huaracha said she and a friend were in the middle of the crowd as the situation began to escalate.

“We were walking, and we were actually in the middle of the group as everything started breaking out,” Huaracha said. “I just grab her hand, and we get out of that little ball of people that are starting to form.”

Huaracha said returning to the Pedestrian Mall was unsettling.

“Honestly, a little bit, yes,” she said. “This is my first time back at the mall since that, and as I was getting ready to come over here, my hands were literally shaking.”

Both students said they were grateful for the university’s Hawk Alert messages.

Iowa City police are asking for the public’s help identifying five people of interest and are urging anyone with information to call (319) 356-5275.
