‘We’re going to be a better community’: Plattsmouth plans for future growth

PLATTSMOUTH, Neb. —

Mayor Paul Lambert said many of the city’s recent projects stem from the devastating Missouri River flooding in 2019, which damaged Plattsmouth’s water and wastewater treatment facilities.

In response, the city built a new wastewater treatment plant outside the floodplain and partnered with the Metropolitan Utilities District to establish a new, long-term water supply. The project includes a more than seven-mile pipeline connecting Plattsmouth to MUD’s system, providing what city leaders say will be a reliable and sustainable source of water for decades to come.

Lambert said those investments not only improve essential services for current residents but also create the capacity needed to support future residential and commercial development.

“We’re setting up our community for future growth,” Lambert said. “It’s going to serve our community for the next 60 to 80 years.”

The city is also planning for continued development along the Highway 75 corridor following the completion of the four-lane expressway expansion. Lambert said Plattsmouth has already seen success with new apartment developments and is looking to attract additional multi-family and single-family housing, as well as commercial investment.

One project the mayor highlighted is the Lofts on Main, which transformed the city’s former high school into apartments after the building sat vacant for more than two decades.

Lambert said preserving historic landmarks while investing in modern infrastructure reflects the city’s vision for sustainable, long-term growth and ensuring Plattsmouth remains an attractive place for families, businesses and future development.
