CHI Health official joins KETV in-studio to talk about spring allergies

As spring begins, Bridget Cornell discussed how wind, dry air, and smoke can affect allergy symptoms.

NEWSWATCH SEVEN SKYCAM NETWORK. ALLERGY SEASON IS OFF TO AN INTENSE START ACROSS THE AREA THIS YEAR, WITH MANY PEOPLE ALREADY DEALING WITH SYMPTOMS EARLIER THAN USUAL. BRIDGETTE CORNELL WITH C HEALTH FAMILY MEDICINE IS HERE TO TALK ABOUT THE RECENT WINDS AND WILDFIRES IN NEBRASKA AND HOW THEY COULD BE AFFECTING YOUR SEASONAL ALLERGIES. SO. SO WE’VE HAD SOME REALLY WINDY DAYS LATELY. HOW DOES THE WIND REALLY RAMP UP THOSE SYMPTOMS? YEAH, SO IT IS VERY WINDY LATELY, ESPECIALLY TODAY. SO THE POLLEN IN THE TREES IS REALLY SPROUTING RIGHT NOW IN NEBRASKA. AND SO THESE HIGH WINDS ARE REALLY COVERING THE DIAMETER OF THE CITY PRETTY HIGH BECAUSE THE WINDS ARE KIND OF LIKE SPREADING IT EVERYWHERE. AND THEN IT KEEPS IT IN THE AIR LONGER WHEN IT’S WINDIER. AND THERE HAVE BEEN GRASS AND FIELD FIRES. CAN SMOKE MAKE ALLERGIES WORSE FOR PEOPLE WHO DON’T NORMALLY SUFFER? YES, SMOKE CAN REALLY MAKE IT WORSE FOR PEOPLE THAT TYPICALLY DON’T EVEN SUFFER FROM ALLERGIES. SO SMOKE HAS LITTLE PARTICLES IN IT THAT CAN THAT ARE CALLED IRRITANTS, THAT CAN REALLY CAUSE INFLAMMATION IN THE THROAT, AS WELL AS THE AIRWAYS AND CAUSING INCREASED SYMPTOMS FOR PEOPLE THAT TYPICALLY DON’T SUFFER FROM ALLERGIES. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MOST COMMON SYMPTOMS THAT DOCTORS ARE SEEING? YES, I WOULD SAY MOST PEOPLE ARE COMING IN WITH ALLERGIES. SYMPTOMS SUCH AS ITCHY EYES, RUNNY NOSE, ITCHY THROAT. SOMETIMES YOU CAN HAVE A LITTLE COUGH TOO. AND WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BIGGEST ALLERGY TRIGGERS THAT YOU’RE SEEING RIGHT NOW? YES, I WOULD SAY THE TOP THREE TRIGGERS WOULD BE THE POLLEN FOR SURE FROM THE TREES. AND THEN THE WIND AS WELL. AND THE SMOKE. AND HOW CAN PEOPLE TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ALLERGY SYMPTOMS AND IRRITATION FROM SMOKE OR POOR AIR QUALITY? YEAH. SO TYPICALLY ALLERGY SYMPTOMS WILL BE MORE ITCHY EYES, ITCHY THROAT AND REALLY RUNNY NOSE AND OF SNEEZING. WHEREAS THE SMOKE IRRITANTS WILL CAUSE MORE LIKE BURNING IN YOUR THROAT AND YOUR EYES WILL BURN MORE. SOMETIMES YOU CAN HAVE SOME CHEST TIGHTNESS OR LIKE A DRY COUGH WITH THE SMOKE IRRITANTS. ARE THERE OVER-THE-COUNTER MEDICATIONS THAT YOU RECOMMEND TO HELP ALLEVIATE THE SYMPTOMS OF ALLERGIES? YES, ACTUALLY. FIRST LINE OVER-THE-COUNTER MEDICATIONS IS WHAT WE RECOMMEND, SUCH AS AN ORAL ANTIHISTAMINE LIKE ALLEGRA, ZYRTEC OR CLARITIN, AS WELL AS A NASAL STEROID CALLED FLONASE. THAT CAN BE REALLY HELPFUL AS WELL. WHAT DO YOU THINK MIGHT BE MISUNDERSTOOD ABOUT ALL OF THIS, OR ANY MISCONCEPTIONS, OR ARE THERE ANY MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT THIS OUT THERE? YEAH, SOMETIMES PEOPLE THINK THAT THEY’RE HAVING LIKE A RESPIRATORY ILLNESS OR THEY’RE HAVING LIKE A COLD AND THEY THINK THEY MIGHT NEED ANTIBIOTICS WHEN REALLY IT’S TRIGGERED BY ALLERGIES. SO IF SYMPTOMS AREN’T GETTING BETTER, I WOULD RECOMMEND THAT YOU SEE YOUR PROVIDER ON HIGH WIND DAYS OR SMOKY DAYS. WHAT CAN PEOPLE DO TO PROTECT THEIR FAMILIES AND THEIR KIDS? YES, I WOULD RECOMMEND THAT THEY KEEP THEM INDOORS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE ON THOSE HIGH, WINDY OR HIGH POLLEN DAYS, AS WELL AS MAKE SURE THAT YOUR WINDOWS ARE SHUT AS WELL. AND THE LAST THING I WOULD SAY IS MAKE SURE THAT YOU’RE WASHING YOUR CLOTHES AS WELL AS TAKING A BATH OR SHOWER EVERY DAY TO GET THOSE THAT POLLEN OFF. SO IMPORTANT. BRIDGETTE CORNELL WITH C H I
