What to know: Iowa’s annual tax-free weekend

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa —

Iowa’s annual sales tax holiday makes its return to the state on Friday, Aug. 7, through midnight Saturday, Aug. 8.

Every business that is open on weekends has to participate. This will also affect online and mail-order purchases.

Online and catalog purchases have to be ordered and paid for during the holiday to be considered eligible for tax-free status.

So, what items are and aren’t taxable?

Clothes and shoes that are under $100 will be sales tax-exempt. However, if they are over $100, they will not be eligible for benefits.

The main tax-free items that Iowa businesses will cover are underwear, coats, belts, diapers, bridal apparel, and more.

Non-tax-free items include jewelry, umbrellas, sports equipment, backpacks, and more.
