Where is Amelia Earhart’s missing plane? Purdue researchers plan search expedition
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. —
Researchers from Purdue University will soon be going to a small island in the South Pacific to investigate whether an object detected there is the missing plane of legendary aviator Amelia Earhart.
The trip was initially scheduled for November 2025 but required additional approval from local governments.

The researchers are now set to depart in October.
Earhart was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean and disappeared in 1937 while attempting to become the first woman to fly around the world.
She previously worked at Purdue University.
“She’s one of our own. The things she did, the things she dared to do… so embody the Boilermaker spirit. We talk about the persistent pursuit notion of always striving for the next achievement, next boundary, next discovery, the resilience and grit; all those things we like to associate with Purdue. She certainly represented that,” said Steve Schultz, who serves as a field assistant and Purdue’s senior vice president and general counsel.
Three representatives from Purdue will be part of the expedition team.
