Wife of Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive coordinator shot at couple’s home

ONE LOUDOUN, Va. —

Mia Bieniemy, the wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, was shot Sunday night at the couple’s Virginia home, according to multiple reports.

Authorities have not publicly identified the victim. However, ESPN and other outlets, citing unnamed sources, reported the victim is Mia Bieniemy, 57.

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a shooting on Northpark Drive in the One Loudoun neighborhood around 7:30 p.m. Sunday. One person was taken to a hospital. Police have not released the victim’s condition.

The couple’s 27-year-old son, Elijah Bieniemy, was arrested, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.

Loudoun County jail records show Elijah Bieniemy was taken into custody Monday and is facing charges including malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Eric Bieniemy was with the Kansas City Chiefs at training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, on Sunday.

A spokesperson for the Kansas City Chiefs released a statement which reads, “The club is aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family. Out of respect for their privacy, we won’t have a comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spoke about the incident after practice Monday, calling the situation “fresh” and saying he learned about it Sunday evening.

“I can’t get into details, but things happen sometimes. Eric will work through it. He’s got a great support group here, as does his family. We’ll just let time take care of it from there,” Reid said. “Mia is stable, which is a plus, and so is Eric Jr., and that’s all important.”

Reid has known Mia Bieniemy and the family for years and said that the fact she is in stable condition is a positive.

“She’s a saint. We all know that, the people that know her. One of God’s good blessings,” Reid said. “But things happen, you know. Things happen. You’ve got to work through it. So that’s where we’re at right now. Time will have to be involved in this to help heal a little bit. So it’ll all work out in the long run.”

Eric Bieniemy is a veteran NFL assistant coach best known for his five seasons as offensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs, where he helped oversee one of the league’s top offenses and won two Super Bowls alongside coach Andy Reid.

A former NFL running back and standout at Colorado, Eric Bieniemy also served as offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders and UCLA before returning to the Chiefs in 2026.
