Wildfires force George Clooney’s family to evacuate home in southern France

George Clooney has said his family has been forced to evacuate their home in southeastern France as a wildfire burned nearby, his agent said Thursday.

The Hollywood star best known for the “Ocean’s Eleven” franchise and his portrayal of Batman in “Batman & Robin” made the statement in a letter to Mayor Didier Bremond of the town of Brignoles, which is a little more than 50 miles east of the city of Marseille, publicist Guido Gotz told The Associated Press in an email.

Addressed “Dear Didier,” the letter reads: “At this point we have no idea whether our beautiful home makes it through this terrible moment,” but the family wanted to “emphasize two things.”

“(F)irst we hope you and the people of our city are safe and second that Amal and I are committed to making sure that whatever happens to our village,” Clooney wrote, referring to his wife. “We are part of this community, and we’ll be part of making it whole.”

The fire near Brignoles broke out Wednesday afternoon and burned some 247 acres, local officials said. About 700 residents were evacuated and were allowed to return to their homes on Thursday after the fire was brought under control.

The Clooneys relocated to southern France in 2021. In a 2025 interview with Esquire magazine, Clooney said the reason for the move was the well-being and security of his children, saying, “I don’t want them to be walking around worried about paparazzi. I don’t want them being compared to somebody else’s famous kids.”

The French government announced in December 2025 that George and Amal Clooney, along with their twin children, had been awarded French citizenship.

The recent European wildfires have raged across Spain and southern France, displacing some 300,000 people as of July 30, according to a report from the BBC.
