The siblings were on a road trip to Mammoth Cave on Friday when a semi-truck driver merged into their lane on Interstate 65, forcing them off the road, according to the report.
Samantha Bloom said she tried to get out after the crash.
“I was trying to figure out how to get out. So I went for my skylight and was trying to open the skylight of the car,” Bloom said.
Trooper Blaine Miller said he saw smoke coming from the vehicle and knew time was critical.
“I observed that, that heavy smoke starting to come from the vehicle. So at that point, I knew that we were on the clock to try to get them out of the vehicle,” Miller said.
Miller told the siblings to close their eyes before he broke the car windshield to help get them to safety.
The Blooms escaped with scrapes and bruises. Bloom said she is grateful Miller was there.
“I just thanked him, and I’m like, yeah, I don’t think we’d be here without him,” Bloom said.
“Recognition is not expected at all in this job. This is what I signed up for, and this is what I believe that I’m meant for. However, it is nice hearing it, especially in today’s time,” Miller said.
Bloom also said she believes her late younger brother Jesse helped protect them.
“100% our brother Jesse; we know that he was like that angel that saved us as well,” Bloom said.
Kentucky State Police said the crash could have had a much worse outcome and stressed the importance of always wearing a seat belt.
