Dozens of airmen gathered at Offutt Air Force Base Thursday morning as the 95th Wing formally stood up two new units, the 95th Maintenance Group and the 95th Operations Group. The activation marks a key step in the Air Force’s broader push to improve readiness and streamline mission execution. Leaders say the new structure ensures more focused oversight of both operations and maintenance within the wing. The 95th Wing carries out seven missions centered on strategic communications for the nation’s top leadership, including the president and senior military officials.”We have seven different missions, all related around strategic communication. for the president, the chairman and the Secretary of War. So it’s an incredibly important mission,” said Commander of the 95th Wing Colonel David C. Leaumont. One of the most visible responsibilities is the E-4B Nightwatch aircraft, a modified Boeing 747 often referred to as the “doomsday plane.” The aircraft is designed to maintain communication between national leaders and military forces during emergencies or extreme scenarios. Leaders say the reorganization also reduces the burden on a single commander by distributing responsibilities across specialized teams.”So instead of having a me making all the decisions as a single point of failure for seven different missions, now I have two experts that I can rely on,” Leaumont said.Looking ahead, the wing is expected to expand significantly, with plans for a new aircraft that could nearly double its size in the coming years.
