WE WANT FAIR, AND ACCURATE ELECTION RESULTS, AND WE TAKE THE STEPS HERE AT THE ELECTION COMMISSION AND ALL ACROSS THE STATE OF NEBRASKA TO ENSURE THAT THAT’S HAPPENING, DOUGLAS COUNTY ELECTION COMMISSIONER DANIEL JENSEN SAYS IN THIS PRIMARY ELECTION, THEY RECEIVED A NUMBER OF MAIL IN DROP BOX BALLOTS ON MONDAY AND TUESDAY, WHICH WERE SCANNED AND DATE STAMPED FROM WEDNESDAY TO FRIDAY. ELECTION WORKERS WERE VERIFYING VOTER INFORMATION, DOUBLE CHECKING POLITICAL PARTY BALLOT AFFILIATIONS AND THEN COUNTING THE OVER 9700 BALLOTS. PEOPLE ARE PROBABLY WATCHING THIS CLOSELY JUST BECAUSE OF THOSE CLOSE RACES. WE HAD SUCH A COMPETITIVE DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY, AND IT WAS OF NATIONAL INTEREST WHEN DOUGLAS COUNTY RESULTS WERE RELEASED FRIDAY SHOWING JOHN KAVANAUGH STILL TRAILING DENISE POWELL BY NEARLY 900 VOTES. HE CONCEDED, SAYING IN A STATEMENT HE CALLED POWELL TO CONGRATULATE HER AND THANKED EVERYONE WHO WAS A PART OF HIS CAMPAIGN. IN A STATEMENT FRIDAY, POWELL SAYS SHE’S PROUD OF HER CAMPAIGN AND THE SUPPORT SURROUNDING HER, AND THAT SHE’S READY FOR THE NEXT CHAPTER OF HER POLITICAL JOURNEY. Cavanaugh, a Nebraska state senator, conceded shortly after the latest vote count was released.

“I want to start by thanking everyone who has made this campaign possible – over 100 volunteers, 13+ labor unions, hardworking Nebraskans who powered this campaign, and my family – especially my wife Kakie, who is the rock of our family,” Cavanaugh said in a statement. “Now that all of the votes have been counted, I’ve called Denise Powell and congratulated her. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this campaign.”

On Wednesday evening, the Associated Press called the race for Powell, who declared victory.

Makayla Danner leads by 2,400 votes over Amy Jacobsen in the race for the Democratic nomination for Douglas County Attorney.
