Douglas County Health Dept. launches new tool for people needing to find relief in the heat

Victoria Holley

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Neb. —

The Douglas County Health Department has launched an online dashboard showing the region’s cooling and warming centers, as the metro sees strong summer heat.

The dashboard features an interactive map showing which centers are currently open. It also has a list of open centers that gives opening hours and phone numbers for each center. It is currently offered in three languages other than English.

Omaha’s Weather Leader is tracking the summer heat this weekend, where heat index values could read into the 100 range. The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Sunday afternoon for parts of northeast Nebraska.

Residents can also visit libraries, malls, and other community centers for free to escape the heat. Multiple parks around the area also include spraygrounds, making it an additional option to cool off. You can find a list on Omaha Parks & Recreation’s website by clicking here.

If you do have to be outside this weekend, it’s important to recognize the signs of heat-related illnesses, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

The health department also announced a new heat-related illness dashboard. It shows the trends over the current heat season based on hospital visits, and has data comparisons from this time last year.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said symptoms of heat exhaustion include dizziness, thirst, heavy sweating, nausea, and weakness. If you experience these symptoms, move to a cooler area, loosen your clothing, sip cool water, and get medical help if your symptoms do not improve.

Heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke. Those symptoms include confusion, dizziness, and fainting. If someone shows these signs, call 911 immediately, move them to a cool area, remove extra layers of clothing, and cool them with water or ice. The CDC says heat stroke can lead to death or permanent disability without treatment.
