Douglas County residents have a new way to get emergency alerts. Through the ReachWell application, users can customize real-time alerts, which are available in over 130 languages. Douglas County Emergency Management Agency Director Whitney Shipley said, “We really want to urge people to stay weather aware this time of year.” ReachWell comes at “no cost, no personal information (and it’s) no different than downloading any other app,” Shipley said. Shipley said through a survey of Douglas County, the agency has found that many refugees had never heard an emergency siren until moving to the metropolitan area. The director said ReachWell offers a more inclusive approach to emergency situations. The first outdoor warning siren test for the 2026 season will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 4. Tests occur on the first Wednesday of each month through October with a single sounding. Tests are weather permitting and will not occur if threatening weather is present.
