Omaha changes traffic signals at intersection of crash that killed 10-year-old, 5-year-old
Omaha Public Works said the changes are meant to improve safety at 114th and West Center, where a crash that killed two children.
OMAHA, Neb. —
Omaha Public Works has changed traffic signal timing after a crash killed two children near 114th Street and West Center Road.

According to police, a Subaru Impreza was attempting to turn when it was hit by an eastbound Chevrolet Malibu. The impact of the crash ripped the Subaru in half.
Omaha police said 10-year-old Prestin Strassenburg and 5-year-old Zaiden Strassenburg were killed as a result of the crash.
Tanner Hunt will be charged with two counts of motor vehicle homicide while driving under the influence in the deadly crash.
Officials said residents had raised safety concerns about the intersection after the July 9 crash, and speed was a factor in the collision.

Prosecutors said Hunt was driving at about 98 mph one second before the impact and had a blood alcohol level of .095.
The new timing makes left turns on West Center Road protected only and removes the flashing yellow permitted left turn.
Traffic officials will monitor the intersection and adjust timing as needed.
Mayor John W. Ewing Jr. said the city is working to improve safety and urged drivers to slow down and never drive under the influence.
“Our hearts are heavy, and we send our deep condolences to the family of these two boys,” Ewing said.
The changes are now in effect.
