Nonprofit City Sprouts connects Omaha through fresh food

Volunteers plant vegetables to feed neighbors

OMAHA, Neb. —

City Sprouts, a nonprofit in Omaha, is growing fresh produce with the help of volunteers to support local food pantries and foster a healthier community.

On a windy workday at the City Sprouts farm in Carter Lake, volunteers from Aradius, an Omaha printing company, worked together to plant 1,200 kohlrabi plants.

“Anytime we can have a half day of work and get out in the sunshine, we will take it,” Taylor Daniels said.

Daniels and her coworkers volunteered to give back to the community that has supported them. They work for Omaha printing company, Aradius, in business for 168 years. Each year, they volunteer to give back to the community that has supported them.

“As simple as it can be. Poke, dig, drop and move on,” volunteer Gavin Eggers said.

City Sprouts is a six-acre farm where everyday people, not professional farmers, do the planting.

“I think when everyone puts their hands in, you get a lot more out. Everyone sort of benefits from it,” Eggers said.

The farm produces about 16,000 pounds of food annually for local food pantries, according to City Sprouts. None of the food is sold, as the nonprofit focuses on teaching the value of eating fresh and local.

“We need more local farmers and local growers to pitch in,” said Laura Simpson, co-manager of Urban Farming at City Sprouts.

City Sprouts emphasizes that eating local food within a 200-mile radius is best for health and sustainability.

In early spring, staff nurtures seedlings in the greenhouse, preparing them for transplanting into the fields.

“We cultivated around 11,500 seedlings that we have in this area, and some are ready to transplant into the field,” City Sprouts co-manager Habib Nizkad said.

Taylor Daniels, a North Omaha resident, highlighted the importance of the farm’s mission.

“Knowing the food we’re planting today will potentially go to some of my neighbors we’re in community with, that’s super important to us,” Daniels said.

City Sprouts believes that when the community comes together, everyone grows. By connecting people with food, the nonprofit fosters a sense of unity and support.
