‘Something that I hope continues forever’: Remembering Cpl. Daegan Page five years later

BEAVER LAKE, Neb. —

Along his family’s street in Beaver Lake, Saturday was all about U.S. Marine Cpl. Daegan Page. The National Heart of the Nation Walk honors each soldier killed in the attack on Kabul airport for the 13 days leading up to the anniversary on Aug. 26.

“[The founder] dedicated a day to each service member, so Aug. 22 is the day for Daegan,” Greg Page, Daegan’s father, said.

While walking around Page’s neighborhood, KETV NewsWatch 7 met family, friends and acquaintances — some of them crossing state lines to be there.

“One of the things that’s been amazing is just the support we get from the community, from Omaha, from veterans, from the different groups that support veterans,” Greg Page said.

Greg Page said the community has been there since he laid his son to rest in 2021.

“I just remember seeing people everywhere you looked,” Greg Page said. “I saw a vet in the back of a truck that was standing there, saluting. I would see people on top of buildings. As we pulled into the cemetery, all of the workers that were up there had their hard hats at their feet.”

Five years after his death, the community continues to show up.

“We want to keep his name alive and keep it going, and to have people show up five years later, that does both things for us,” Greg Page said. “It’s something that I hope continues forever.”

“I just love supporting, I love being here with the family,” Gabi Tranisi, a family friend, said. “It’s been one of my favorite things for the past four years. It’s a good reason to get out, be active and support a great cause.”

Greg Page also helped found the Daegan Page Foundation and he makes sure the support spreads past his family and to veterans across the country.

“Those were his brothers. Those were, you know, the people that when we met them, all said, ‘Daegan was my best friend,’ and we wanted to make sure that we supported that community,” Greg Page said.

With the community behind them, the Page family continues to remember their soldier, one step at a time.

The Daegan Page Foundation will continue to remember and support veterans during their annual Daegan Page Golf Scramble at the Lake Ridge Golf Course starting Sept. 18.
