Stage 4 cancer survivor finds passion on the pickleball court thanks to Southwest YMCA program

The Southwest YMCA was filled with cheers Thursday as family, friends and dozens of summer campers gathered to support Steve Jensen during a special pickleball match.Jensen, who is battling stage 4 prostate cancer, challenged his friend Jesse Carr to a friendly game after discovering a love for pickleball through the YMCA’s Livestrong program for cancer survivors. Carr, owner of Super Scooper, accepted the challenge and took the court dressed as the company’s dog mascot.For Jensen, the event was about more than competition. He said pickleball and the friendships he has built at the YMCA have helped him navigate his cancer journey.“I have cancer, but I’m not sitting at home,” Jensen said. “Let’s get out and have some fun.”Jensen first learned about pickleball after joining the Livestrong program at the YMCA.
