Tyler Perry tried to help TSA workers with $1,000 gift cards. Here’s why workers are being asked to return them
Transportation Safety Administration employees in Atlanta, Georgia, are reportedly being asked to return gift cards from actor and filmmaker Tyler Perry. On Friday, People reported that Perry gave $250,000 worth of gift cards to bring relief to TSA workers at Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport who had been working without pay due to the ongoing government shutdown. Approximately 250 TSA officers at the airport, which is among the busiest in the United States, were given $1,000 gift cards. According to various news outlets, Perry had initially gone to the busy airport to hand out cash, but due to federal regulations prohibiting TSA officers from accepting cash gifts, Perry’s representatives worked with the TSA and union leaders to gift the TSA employees with the gift cards instead. However, on Sunday, local news outlet WXIA reported that multiple sources familiar with the matter said TSA workers were being asked to return the gift cards after the airport’s security director raised concerns. It has also been reported that the situation has created challenges and raised questions from workers who were already given the gift cards and used at least a portion of the funds on the gift cards. While the shutdown continues, TSA officers on Monday began receiving most of their backpay as a result of President Donald Trump on Friday took executive action to order DHS to pay TSA officers immediately. Perry hasn’t publicly commented on the situation.
