YUKON, Okla. —

A woman was struck by a stray bullet during a Fourth of July festival in Oklahoma. Witnesses described the bizarre situation as “very, very scary.”

A woman was watching fireworks with her family on July 5 during Yukon’s Freedom Fest when she was shot in the arm by a bullet that police believe came from nearly 2 miles away. The woman is now out of the hospital and is doing OK.

Witnesses said it was a wild scene when people realized she had been hit by a bullet.

“But you never really think anything is going to happen,” Tarrah Meade, who is a regular at Freedom Fest, said. “Well, just all the families that get together, you know, and we just come out here and celebrate and just have a good time.”

In the middle of the fireworks and drone show, Meade said a rush of officers came her way.

“We were over there in the area watching the fireworks and were walking back, and all of a sudden, we see all these policemen rushing towards us with their guns drawn,” Meade said. “But just seeing all of that happening was very, very scary.”

Police said the investigation led them to believe the shooter wasn’t in that park at all. The shots-fired call, which police believe to be connected to the stray bullet, originated 1.6 miles away.

“It’s reckless behavior, in my opinion,” Meade said.

It’s not exactly clear where the alleged shooter was.

“We did discover that there was a shots-fired call that was reported in Oklahoma City around the same timeframe, just a little bit down — a mile down the road, off of Czech Hall, and so investigators were able to kind of just look in that area,” Brown said.

Cylie Woods said she is still shaken up by the incident.

“I just don’t know why people have to feel the need to want to do that,” Woods said.

Meade and Woods said even though this happened, they are still planning on returning to Freedom Fest next year.

“We’ll be back. I mean, one little incident is not going to stop us from returning, but we just want everyone to be safe,” Meade said.

Yukon police officers said they are still investigating the incident.
