Column restoration underway at White House, with scaffolding and new tarp covering area
WASHINGTON —
Scaffolding and a tarp have been installed around the North Portico of the White House as part of standard restoration work on its columns, according to the White House.
An official told Hearst Television they’re specifically working on stone repair in the columns, and emphasized it’s not for a new structure but for maintenance on one of the most recognizable parts of the building.

Construction workers place a tarp over the scaffolding surrounding the columns at the North Portico of the White House on July 9, 2026, in Washington, DC. U.S. President Donald Trump continues to do construction throughout the White House grounds.
This restoration is taking place alongside other visible changes around the White House. Construction on the ballroom and underlying structures continues where the East Wing once stood, and a new helipad is being built on the South Lawn.
