Woman gets sick from cyclospora parasite while on honeymoon

A Wisconsin woman was on her honeymoon at Yellowstone National Park when she started to feel ill. Doctors confirmed she had the diarrhea-causing parasite cyclospora.

“I felt fine until we got out here, and a couple days into camping here, I started having symptoms,” newlywed Gretchen Pleuss said.

What should have been a romantic camping trip to Yellowstone National Park turned into a horror vacation filled with a lot of trips to the bathroom.

“It was just like incessant diarrhea,” Pleuss said.

A few days into the trip, the pain became so intense that she went to the emergency room. Doctors confirmed the cyclospora parasite was in her system.

“It feels like your intestines are really tight, like something is seizing them,” Pleuss said.

While it’s been anything but the perfect start to happily ever after, the couple is staying positive, saying that they’re making the best of it.

“Our vows said in sickness and in health, so we’re just getting an early start on that,” Pleuss said.

Federal health officials on Thursday identified lettuce from Mexico served by Taco Bell locations across five U.S. states as a source of the cyclospora outbreak. The CDC warned consumers not to eat shredded iceberg lettuce from Taco Bell restaurants in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia.
