The newlywed couple boarded a helicopter for a send-off, but it crashed near the wedding venue. Dave Fiji died, and the bride, Jesni, survived and was trapped in the wreckage for several hours, WANF-TV reported. The helicopter pilot also died.
Fiji’s father, George, said the couple met through church more than a decade ago, according to People.
“My son was so happy,” George Fiji said of his son.
His wife, Jesni, who is a nurse, woke up in the rubble after the crash and knew her husband was gone.
“When she touched him, she called out to him. He was already cold,” George Fiji said, according to People.
His son, a Delta pilot, had expressed concerns about limited visibility before the helicopter took off, WSB-TV reported. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.
