Madison County son charged with first-degree murder after alleged confession in mother’s shooting

A 23-year-old Madison County man has been charged with first-degree murder after authorities say he admitted to fatally shooting his mother at a rural residence.

Madison County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched shortly after 10 a.m. Monday to the 2300 block of 148th Street in rural Madison County to conduct a welfare check on Tammy Corkrean, 60.

According to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrived at the residence and discovered Corkrean dead from multiple gunshot wounds.

During the investigation, authorities questioned her son, Theodore Corkrean, 23, who allegedly admitted to investigators that he shot his mother the previous day.

Theodore Corkrean, 23, has been charged with first-degree murder after his mother was found dead in her rural Madison County home on Monday, June 23, 2026. Authorities say Corkrean admitted to shooting Tammy Corkrean, 60.

Corkrean was taken into custody and booked into the Madison County Jail. He has been charged with first-degree murder and is awaiting arraignment.

The investigation remains ongoing.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is being assisted by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the West Des Moines Police Department.
