Thousands gather at Omaha Burke High for the state track meet each year. Nebraska School Activities Association Assistant Director of Track and Field Nate Neuhaus says they could break an attendance record again this year.”We set attendance records every year,” Neuhaus told KETV, “the weather this year, I think, will lend you even bigger numbers in attendance this year, you’re not going to find a better state track meet across the country.”Neuhaus expects 6,000 to 6,500 attendees per day across the four-day event. It started on Wednesday. “Anytime you bring 7,000 people to one particular venue, there’s going to be parking and traffic issues that you deal with, and we get the right people involved, and it’s extremely manageable to get in and out of this event in an efficient manner,” Neuhaus said. Many choose to take the shuttle from Westroads Mall, while others park in nearby neighborhoods and in the grass lots near the stadium. For soon-to-be freshman Charlie Trautman, the event is an opportunity to raise funds through a bake sale. The proceeds from the bake sale benefit the nonprofit Hope of the Poor, and Trautman is taking advantage of the thousands of attendees passing by each day.Attendees told KETV it’s a bit of a walk after parking, but it’s part of the event.”It’s good to walk after you’ve been sitting for a while anyway,” said Kathy Draeger of Seward. The cooler weather was a welcome change for attendees. “This is gorgeous weather with a little bit overcast and a little bit cool. We’ll take it over the heat,” said Amy Smith of Ashland-Greenwood. Classes A and B participate on Wednesday and Thursday, with Classes C & D on Friday and Saturday. The Nebraska School Activities Association said the split schedule, implemented since the COVID-19 pandemic, has helped with both parking and attendance overall.Make sure you can always see the latest news, weather, sports and more from KETV NewsWatch 7 on Google search.NAVIGATE: Home | Weather | Local News | National | Sports | Newscasts on demand |
