An Omaha man is hosting an Ole Miss fan at his home during the College World Series, honoring a promise made after they met at a baseball game four years ago. Jon Firmature of Omaha was visiting his daughter, an Ole Miss student, in 2022 in Oxford, Mississippi. In a seat in front of him was Charlie Farris, a Rebels season ticket holder. “I’ve never been to any other place where I just basically had an instant friend,” Firmature told KETV on Friday. The pair struck up a conversation. Eventually, Firmature told Farris that when Ole Miss makes it to Omaha, he’d have a place to stay.It turned out not to be a throw-away comment. “We now text all the time, talk about a lot more than baseball,” Farris told KETV. “We talk about family and golf, and you name it.”Ole Miss went on an improbable run to win the College World Series that same summer. But Farris didn’t attend. “We felt like if we came up to Omaha, we were jinxing the team, so we didn’t come,” Farris explained. “Now that we’ve won, that spell has been broken.” In 2023, Firmature returned to Oxford as his stepson, a baseball player for Arkansas, played there. The pair tailgated together for that weekend series. As Ole Miss was an out away from making Omaha this year, the two were texting.”I go, ‘Hotel Firmature, come on back,'” And he called. I’m like, ‘Yep, come on up,'” Firmature said. It’s Farris’ first trip to Nebraska. “Everybody’s having a good time,” he said. “Everybody wants to be friends with each other until the game starts, of course. But then we’ll still be friends after the game, too.”Firmature agreed the College World Series is about more than just baseball. “That’s what I love about this time of year is just you get to meet so many people, and you make new friends. So this has been a great opportunity for us,” Firmature said. Firmature is a Husker fan and was disappointed Nebraska didn’t make it out of the Lincoln regional, but he said Ole Miss was the next best team to win the regional.
